6 Exotic Destinations for Your Next Summer Escape

Updated: 15 December 2025 - Author: Quintin Carlson

Six months of winter is plenty of reason to start planning a warm-weather escape, and the Indian Ocean, Southeast Asia and the Mediterranean between them cover almost every version of "exotic" a traveller could want. This guide runs through six destinations that consistently deliver on that promise — two tropical archipelagos, two culture-and-history stops, and two islands that blend both — along with the practical basics for planning whichever one you pick.

6 Exotic Destinations for Your Next Summer Escape

Maldives

The Maldives is built around one thing: a turquoise, coral-fringed lagoon with an overwater villa or beachfront bungalow at the centre of it. It's a strong match for snorkelling, diving and simply doing very little, and most resorts occupy their own private island, which keeps things quiet. Families are increasingly well catered for too, with several resorts running dedicated kids' clubs and gentler activities like dolphin-watching trips. See Quintrip's Maldives holiday packages for resort options across the atolls.

Seychelles

The Seychelles trades the Maldives' overwater villas for granite boulder beaches, dense jungle interiors and a slightly more laid-back pace. It works equally well as a honeymoon base or a family trip, with beaches like Anse Source d'Argent on La Digue among the most photographed in the world. Nature lovers also get more to do here than on a typical atoll — giant tortoise reserves and marine parks are easy day trips from most resorts. See Quintrip's Seychelles holiday packages to compare islands and resorts.

Bali

Bali covers more ground than most single-island destinations: surf beaches in the south, rice terraces and temples around Ubud, and a cooler, greener interior if you want a break from the coast. It suits travellers who want a beach holiday with a genuine cultural layer rather than a resort-only stay, and it's a relatively easy island to move around by car or driver if you want to see more than one region. See Quintrip's Bali holiday packages for beach and cultural itinerary options.

Thailand

Thailand works year-round, but it's an easy sell for a summer break thanks to warm seas and a genuinely wide range of experiences packed into one country — Bangkok's street food and nightlife, the beaches and islands around Phuket and Krabi, and the temples and cooler hills of Chiang Mai further north. It's also one of the more straightforward long-haul options for South Africans in terms of value for what's included in a typical package. See Quintrip's Thailand holiday packages.

Egypt

Egypt is the pick for travellers who want history rather than (or alongside) beach time: the Pyramids of Giza and the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, temple complexes in Luxor, and Nile cruises that combine several ancient sites in one trip. The Red Sea coast, around Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada, adds a genuine beach-and-diving option if you want to bookend the history with a few days of nothing. See Quintrip's Egypt holiday packages.

Greece

Greece suits travellers drawn to mythology, ancient architecture and island-hopping in roughly equal measure. Athens covers the history side — the Acropolis and the Parthenon chief among the sites — while islands like Mykonos, Santorini and Corfu each have a distinct character, from whitewashed cliffside towns to quieter, greener coastlines. It's an easy destination to build a two-centre trip around: a few days in Athens, then an island or two. See Quintrip's Greece holiday packages.

Planning the Trip

A few things are worth sorting early regardless of which destination you choose. Book resorts and flights ahead where you can — popular islands and peak-season dates fill up faster than you'd expect. Pack for the specific climate rather than "summer" in general: humidity and rain patterns differ a lot between, say, Bali's wet season and Egypt's dry desert heat. And take out travel insurance before you go — it's the one thing that's genuinely hard to arrange after the fact if something goes wrong.

Quick Destination FAQ

  • Which of these is best for a honeymoon? Maldives and Seychelles are the most established honeymoon destinations of the six, largely thanks to private-island resorts and adults-focused villas.

  • Which is easiest to combine with a beach holiday and sightseeing in one trip? Egypt (Nile history plus Red Sea coast) and Greece (Athens plus islands) both split naturally into a two-part itinerary.

  • Roughly how long is the flight from South Africa? Direct or one-stop flights range from around 6–7 hours to Mauritius-adjacent Indian Ocean routes' equivalents for the Maldives and Seychelles, up to 10–12 hours or more for Thailand, Bali, Egypt and Greece depending on route and stopover.

  • Do South Africans need a visa for these destinations? It varies a lot across the six: Seychelles and the Maldives issue tourist entry on arrival with no advance visa needed; Egypt and Thailand offer visa-on-arrival or short visa-exempt stays for South African passport holders; Greece (Schengen) and Indonesia (for Bali) both require a visa arranged before you travel. Requirements change periodically, so confirm directly with the relevant embassy or your consultant before booking.

  • How many days should I plan for each? As a rough minimum: 5–7 nights for Maldives or Seychelles, 7–10 nights for Thailand, Bali or Egypt, and 8–10 nights for a Greece two-centre trip.

Six very different holidays, and no wrong answer among them — the right one usually comes down to whether you want to switch off completely or split your time between history and the beach. Quintrip can help build the package around whichever you choose.
