Approximately thirty kilometers of sandy beaches, including twenty-two kilometers of lagoon, are available on the island, which has been excellently conserved and protected by a coral reef.

Swimming sports, including those using fins, masks, and snorkels, as well as those involving the driving power of the waves, such as surfing, bodyboarding, and paddleboarding, are forbidden within a 300-meter zone around the shoreline. It is situated at the southernmost point of Saint-Gilles-les-Bains, on the Trou d'eau beach. Although it is a peaceful beach, it is not monitored. The coral reef naturally protects a basin from the surge that comes with it. Finally, be aware that the sand in the salt pond may be quite hot!

The beach of Tremblet/Vieux Port, which is situated on the territory of the commune of Saint-Philippe in the south-east of the island and has the distinction of being one of the world's youngest beaches. It was produced in 2007 because of the eruption of the volcano Piton de la Fournaise. The lava flowed all the way to the shore, which had previously been stony. There is now a 300-meter-long stretch of extremely fine black sand that has created an unusual and wild location! The high tide and the currents, on the other hand, should be avoided. Swimming is not permitted under any circumstances.
