The Irish language is said to have given rise to the name Kilkenny. Located in southeastern Ireland, Kilkenny earned the nickname marble city. It is a little town with a large city vibe, a 12th-century castle, a lively crafts scene, traditional pubs, cobbled pathways, and secret passages.
A borough council oversees city government in Kilkenny, and the city is presided over by a Mayor. Kilkenny was the old capital of the kingdom of Ossory and was built on a religious foundation. In 1609, the settlement was granted a royal charter and later elevated to the status of a city.
The town and the surrounding area have a combined population of around 25,000 people. Even though it has a population of only a few thousand, it is considered an ancient city because it has a cathedral and a royal charter from 1609.
Co. Kilkenny is surrounded by the large flowing Rivers Nore and Barrow, whose sister river, the Suir, serves as a boundary with Co. Waterford.

Visit St. Canice's Cathedral and the Round Tower

In honor of St. Canice, who built this settlement in the sixth century, it bears his name. It is known as Cill Channigh in Gaelic, which means the Church of Canice. The construction of St. Canice's Cathedral started throughout the 1250s and was finalized in 1285. The religious foundations of the site date back to the sixth century.
