Mauritius's East Coast: Golf, Belle Mare and Aapravasi Ghat

Updated: 28 January 2026 - Author: Quintin Carlson

Most Mauritius guides gravitate toward Le Morne or Grand Baie, but the east coast — Belle Mare in particular — has its own draw that doesn't come up as often: genuine championship golf alongside a long, sheltered stretch of beach, without the crowds of the north coast.

Mauritius's East Coast: Golf, Belle Mare and Aapravasi Ghat

Constance Belle Mare Plage

This resort is built around two 18-hole championship courses, Links and Legend, which is the real reason golfers specifically seek this stretch of coast out. Rooms range from Prestige Rooms to multi-bedroom villas with private pools, set along a genuinely long two-kilometre beach in a sheltered bay — enough space that it doesn't feel crowded even at capacity. Dining spans several venues, including a dedicated wine cellar restaurant (Blue Penny Cellar) for anyone who wants that as part of the stay rather than an afterthought. It's roughly 65 minutes from the airport, a bit further out than west-coast properties, worth factoring into arrival-day planning. From R26,465 per person sharing for 5 nights, Breakfast & Dinner, flights from Johannesburg included.

Golf aside, Belle Mare beach itself is one of the better spots on the island for kitesurfing and windsurfing, thanks to consistent trade winds along this stretch of coast — worth knowing if watersports matter as much as the golf does.

For a genuinely different stop, Aapravasi Ghat in Port Louis is a UNESCO World Heritage Site marking where indentured labourers arrived in Mauritius from India and elsewhere from the 1830s onward — a significant, sobering piece of the island's history that doesn't fit neatly into a "relaxation" itinerary, but is worth the hour it takes to visit if you want more than a beach-and-resort picture of the country. Port Louis's markets are a livelier, more straightforward stop on the same day if you want to balance the history with something lighter.

FAQ

Do you need to be an experienced golfer to enjoy Belle Mare?
No — both courses accommodate a range of skill levels, and the resort itself works as a standard beach stay even if golf isn't the focus of your trip.

What's the best time for kitesurfing at Belle Mare?
June to September, during Mauritius's windier winter months, tends to bring the most consistent conditions.

How long is the flight from South Africa?
Direct flights from Johannesburg take around 4 hours.

Do South Africans need a visa?
No — South African passport holders can enter Mauritius visa-free for short tourist stays.
