Diani Beach: A Practical Guide to Kenya's Coast

Updated: 5 January 2026 - Author: Quintin Carlson

Diani Beach sits south of Mombasa on Kenya's coast — reached via Moi International Airport or the smaller Ukunda airstrip closer to the beach itself. It's one of Kenya's most established beach destinations, with enough real substance beyond the sand (restaurants, a coastal rainforest reserve, a sacred forest) to fill a few days without repeating yourself.

Baobab Beach Resort & Spa

Baobab Beach Resort spreads across roughly 32 hectares of beachfront garden, split into three wings (Baobab, Maridadi, Kole Kole), with three pools and five restaurants — three included in the all-inclusive plan, two à la carte at extra cost. Rooms range from garden-view to sea-front depending on category, and the resort runs a full activity programme (archery, tennis, yoga, beach walks included; snorkelling, diving and deep-sea fishing at extra cost). It's a genuinely large property, which suits families and groups better than travellers wanting something small and quiet. From R18,975 per person sharing for 5 nights, all-inclusive, flights from Johannesburg included.

Beyond the resort

Ali Barbour's Cave Restaurant, set inside a natural coral cave, is a genuine Diani institution and worth booking ahead for dinner rather than treating as a casual stop. For something more low-key, most beachfront spots serve grilled fish, coconut curries and fresh prawns — often the same catch landed that morning.

Shimba Hills National Reserve, a short drive inland, is one of Kenya's last coastal rainforests and one of the few places in the country with sable antelope, alongside elephant and over 100 recorded bird species. Sheldrick Falls, reached by a hiking trail within the reserve, is a genuine highlight if you want one active day away from the beach. Kaya Kinondo Sacred Forest, a UNESCO-recognised site tied to the local Digo community, is a shorter, more reflective stop closer to Diani itself — guided visits only, out of respect for its ongoing spiritual significance.

FAQ

How do you get to Diani Beach from South Africa?
Via Nairobi or directly to Mombasa's Moi International Airport, then a short transfer south to Diani.

What's the best time to visit?
December to March and July to October are the driest windows. April-June is the long rains, with lower prices but more disruption to outdoor plans.

Do South Africans need a visa?
Yes — an eTA (electronic travel authorisation) is required in advance, applied for online rather than on arrival.

What currency and language should we expect?
Kenyan Shilling (KES); Swahili and English are both official languages, with English widely used in tourism.
